Built in 1868 for Anthony Cogswell, this two story brick home is
restored and furnished in period styles. This a part of the
underground railroad and a tunnel was built under the a fireplace
that ran to the river. Anthony Cogswell was mayor of
Brownville for 2 terms and a director in the ill-fated Quincy and
Pacific Railroad Line.
Mr. Cogswell was a well known politician in his day. Born in 1829 in
Gilmantown, New Hampshire, he moved to Baton Rouge, Louisana before coming
to Brownville. He was also a Mason in addition to being elected Grand Master by the
Odd Fellows. He moved again to Iola, Allen County, Kansas and was elected a State
Senator in Kansas.
