Rural Church Directory

These early churches remain intact in Nemaha County.  While there are many more places of worship, these stand out as some of the oldest:

  • St. John's (Stone) Lutheran Church.  Located 4 miles south of highway 136, 3 miles east of Johnson (or intersection of US136 and N105), Stone Church is one of the oldest and most historically interesting churches in the county.  It was built in 1868 out of native limestone and is adorned by a bell cast from cannons from the Franco-Prussian War (this one comes from cannons used in the Battle of Sedan) and given as a gift to the largely German congregation by Kaiser Wilhelm I.  Although services are now conducted in an adjacent modern structure, the old church is in active use for meetings and Sunday school.
  • Zion Lutheran Church:  Located 2 miles north of Johnson on N105, Zion is one of the most frequently photographed churches in Nebraska.  Built in 1883, the church's graceful spire is beautifully framed by brilliant foliage in the fall.
In addition to these country churches, there are several in towns that would still fit most definitions of "rural":
  • Brownville Methodist Church:  Built in 1859, this church is likely the oldest church in continuous service as a church in the state.  Located one block north of Highway 136 in Brownville, the church was originally intended to be part of the medical college, but the Civil War took the doctors into military service and the school closed.  In 1961, the church was designated a Methodist Shrine and was restored to its current condition.
  • Brock Methodist Church.  Built in 1883, the Brock Methodist Church is a fine example of early church architecture after which several churches of different denominations have been modeled.  The church was originally a Mission Station used by circuit riders and was dedicated as a church in 1883.

There are a number of places of worship around the county.  Contact the church directly for more information about services or beliefs.
