Thomas Jefferson Majors History

Home > History

Majors served as state senator, lieutenant governor, and U.S. congressman. He was active in promoting the idea of using Old Mount Vernon College (1863) in Peru as a state normal school. His efforts were successful in 1867 when the property was given to the state and subsequently became Peru State College

  • 1860 Moved to Peru, Nebraska
  • June 1861 Joined the Union Army as 1st Lieutenant of Company C, 1st Regiment, Nebraska Volunteer Infantry.
  • Served as Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel
  • June 15, 1866 Left the military
  • 1866 Member of the Nebraska Territorial Council
  • 1867 - 1869 Member of the State Senate
  • 1878 - 1879 Served in Congress 
  • 1892 Ran for Nebraska Governor
  • 1932 died, interned at Mount Vernon, Peru, Nebraska
