Alice Minick was an early woman attorney. Born in 1844 in
New York,
Alice came to the Nebraska Territory about 1854 in covered wagon with
her family. She achieved her undergraduate degree in music in
New York. She taught music, wrote poetry and even published a
book.
Alice married Captain John Minick at the age of 22 but John died
at an early age living Alice a widow with an estate to take care
of. Because of that event she decided to study law.
At the age of 48, in 1892, she became the first woman graduate of
the University of Nebraska College of Law. She was admitted to
practice before the Nebraska Supreme Court on May 17, 1892.
"I felt when I took up law that there was a great opportunity
to assist other women, and most of my clients have been women."
Alice A. Minick, as quoted in the Omaha World Herald, October 14,
1911.
